Art is Prayer

We will have a give away as soon as summer winds down and people are back in the loop. For now I have this to post.

I am reading The Vein of Gold by Julia Cameron, who also wrote The Artists Way,  and in it she states that art is prayer and to me it is. When I am creating I go to another ‘place’. I forget what time it is – I forget to eat. I am totally absorbed in my creation it is like an intense prayerful state. When I am finished I breathe deep and I see that my dream vision has come from my mind through my hands and onto the canvas and I am so happy. Sometimes I even clap my hands and dance around as I see a  prayer come to life in color or shapes or pictures or beads or  whatever I have dreamed. Prayers can be anything. Looking at a sunset and saying one word like “beauty” is a prayer. Kissing a newborns cheek is a prayer. Prayers are everywhere.

Please tell me in your comments how art and creating is like prayer to you. This is my Treasure Map Prayer Collage that I did as a task from the above book.

I am looking forward to hearing from you!!

  1. Hello Donna

This is the work of the Holy Spirit I feel. In my blog, I posted on "God Bag", which was in response to a comment I placed on Jeanne A Collage for Life, who also wrote about the Artist's Way this week.

Wishing you a week of joy

  2. Your treasure map is beautiful my friend ;o) Donna, I am the same as you! When I do my art, I go to another place as well! I don't hear the music or the t.v. My crows are calling to me to paint them and my hand just flows ;o) When I am finished, I am so happy too! Big Hugs ;o)

  3. I agree with Magic love Crow (which is a great name BTW)!

  4. Like Helen, I think that what we create is a direct result of the Holy Spirit. I know sometimes I need to get in the way!

  5. My art has felt very much like prayer these days and at times I feel it is a way for me to communicate the prayers of my heart. I am very thankful God had the idea to have people express themselves and their love for Him through art. It's a bit mysterious in a way and beautiful to behold.

Your collage is very moving, Donna. It breaks the chains of worldly desires and anxiety and lifts the mind to God and heavenly things.

  6. I love your treasure map thoughts Donna. Thanks for stopping by my PPF, I do appreciate it. I've been busy as of late and the weather is just too hot to sit at a computer so I haven't been on much lately. Wednesdays and Fridays are pretty much it. Fridays I usually leave comments for PPF and Wednesdays is Hump Day Haiku. That's what you'll find me doing for a few hours. Thanks for the nice comment. Love your map. You put a lot of heart into it. Take care and enjoy your weekend.

  7. Hi Donna ... I don't remember seeing this is my reader ... I love this idea ... I have done something like this many years ago with a journal, cutting out and drawing different things that come to mind and were special to me or explained a feeling I was having. This is a wonderful way to get in touch with our inner selves ... who we really are.

    Love Always,

  8. I have always though of art as such too. Thank you for putting it into words for me.
